Artist of the Week - 17th April 2011
Nick Stamp’s sculptures cross and re-cross the notional dividing lines between craft and fine art, exploring their points of distinction and similarity. His respect for the skills of authentic craftspeople informs his work and he strives to produce pieces using the kinds of materials we encounter in objects more commonly associated with functionality and utility than with artistic aesthetics. The work involves a degree of playfully conscious naivety; he leads us through various stages of the creative process in the way that a child might experiment with materials before leading us to that “Eureka” moment when skill, experience and vision combine to produce something of real value.
