I make work bordering upon system and chaos, logic and dysfunction. The work incites a questioning and confrontation with purpose, thought and influence. Working with familiar non-precious materials; paper, thread, sugar, staples etc, allows for a relationship synonymous with mark, and an exploration in metaphorical value of the functional. The work aims to create a contemplative space for the viewer. In an obsessive interaction with the controlled variable: White.
White is the visual framework of my practice; it attempts absence of reality in the creation of a space in-between conflicting thoughts.
‘white can be seen as the basic form of life or information that emerges from chaos; it is that extreme form of negative entropy that is bound and determined to make clean escape’- Kenya Hara, White
My practice is influenced by a fascination with theories of understanding, of our Universe and existence within it; this harks back to a naivety but an interest in all things, or in things unknown. This space between knowledge, of things intangible and incomprehensible is the exact area in which my practice sits.

Nick Stamp

Artist of the Week - 17th April 2011

Nick Stamp’s sculptures cross and re-cross the notional dividing lines between craft and fine art, exploring their points of distinction and similarity. His respect for the skills of authentic craftspeople informs his work and he strives to produce pieces using the kinds of materials we encounter in objects more commonly associated with functionality and utility than with artistic aesthetics. The work involves a degree of playfully conscious naivety; he leads us through various stages of the creative process in the way that a child might experiment with materials before leading us to that “Eureka” moment when skill, experience and vision combine to produce something of real value.

Louise Grant

Artist of the week - 10th April 2011

My work joins interests in texture, monochrome and surface. Adding multiple layers of texture to a plain canvas and painting across in a none descript way, helping to create a further interest in using paint materials that clash and traditionally are not used together. The surface of the painting is of interest to push against what the usual crisp, flat, perfect surface of a monochrome painting does. Layering glazing or resins materials over the canvas once it has been painted begins to both engage the viewer further into the textural paint and pushes them away from the texture. Combining certain elements of these ideas together within an individual painting allow the elements to enhance what the other are doing.

Anna Borowicz

Artist of the Week - 3rd April 2011

My practise grew from a concern for the basic human need to belong, notions of home subverted by feelings of detachment. The fragmentation arising in the world overloaded with illusions of choice. I have been exploring these concepts through processes of constructing, collaging or layering objects, images and meanings that imply underlying quasi-narratives. Experimenting with spatial ambiguity of interiors where misaligned walls suggest rooms in-between and mirrored surfaces reflect non-existing spaces.
The preoccupation with space and architecture arises alongside a concern for the viewer’s position within the work. One is confronted with the choice of singular/multiple gazes, the play of interior/exterior and the illusions of solid/ephemeral. Theatrical elements, layers of irony and immediate constructions are interwoven with precise critical meaning.

'80 Found Objects in Slide Cases' 2010, dimensions variable.

“An artist is like an alchemist, he can turn worthless things into gold.”
James Putnam, paper presented at Provenance Symposium, October 2010.
I aim to uncover the un-noticed, ignored and valueless. My practice is concerned with forcing the viewer to look and notice in different ways.
An object or a moment can be transformed when highlighted and given significance. I often use lighting or projection to paint objects in a fresh light, authenticating the things I select in the way that they are collated and presented. I frequently set parameters for the activity of collecting, and the assembled groups of ‘worthless’ objects take on dynamic new forms and meanings through installations, drawings and projections.
'All That Glitters Is Not Gold' 2010, interactive overhead projection with found objects, dimensions variable.
